Athletes, especially young adults, are somewhat revered and admired in American culture. There is an allure to athletes at Emory like at almost any school. At the University of Georgia, football players are treated like Gods. The football players are automatically the most popular kids on campus and essentially own the social culture at the school. But even at Emory, the athletes are in control of the social ladder at the school. Many fraternities strive to get the most athletes to join their chapters, and many sports teams even throw their own parties. From what I have observed, the most popular kids are typically the athletic ones; no matter if they are varsity athletes. But what exactly connects sports to popularity and how are athletics part of the college social culture? Yes typically athletes are in the best shape and have the best bodies, but even so there is still a label of being athletic that attracts positive attention from many. For example, television shows like Friday Night Lights clearly demonstrate the allure to athletes in social structures.
