It was probably about the third week of Kindergarten, and yes I do remember this vividly, and I was walking around the playground looking for something to do. I had made a few acquaintances in the first few weeks of school, but did not exactly have any real friends yet. I was a bit alone, but it was early on in the school year. As I walked towards the swing set, I saw a red ball flying through the air. It bounced off the big concrete wall and flew all the way back across the playground and landed in a boy's hands. I had barely met this other boy even though he was in my class, but that red ball sure did look fun. I went up to him, introduced myself, and asked if i could throw the ball around with him. The boy's name was Jeremy and he agreed to play a little game of catch. For the next 30 minutes of recess we preceded to chuck the ball around ferociously as we went skying across the playground. It was pretty fun. As recess ended, we walked back inside together and barely said a word to each other; we were both just shy little kindergartners. The next day during recess we played the same exact game of catch, and the day after that we played also. We started to have conversations before and after our games of catch, and then we started to sit next to each other in our class everyday. Slowly but surely a friendship grew through our games of catch on the playground. We were just two young and shy little kids, but that red ball was all we needed to connect us.
For the next nine years, Jeremy and I played catch almost everyday. The red ball was substituted for a football and sometimes a baseball, but playing catch still brought us together. We became best friends for all of lower school and middle school. Unfortunately Jeremy and I went to different high schools, but we still stayed very good friends. Even though we're in college now, Jeremy and I talk about once a week. We have built a strong bond that all started over a game of catch on the playground. And whenever we are back home and see each other, we always go to the park and toss around a football.
